Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to: a) assess job satisfaction and burnout among high school special education teachers, b) investigate relationships between job satisfaction and burnout and c) investigate the level of prediction of burnout by job satisfaction. The sample was 48 Greek special education teachers (aged 24 to 64 years). Participants completed anonymously the following questionnaires: (1) the Maslach Burnout Inventory (BMI, Maslach & Jackson, 1986), and (2) the Employee Satisfaction Inventory (ESI, Koustelios & Bagiatis, 1997). Multiple stepwise linear regression analysis with six factors of job satisfaction revealed that satisfaction with “job itself” and satisfaction with “organizational as a whole” were significant predictors for “emotional exhaustion”. Furthermore, it appeared that satisfaction with “job itself” was the significant predictor for “personal accomplishment”. The implications are discussed, and recommendations made. The above findings may lead to a better planning of an educational framework and support system for teachers in special education adapted to the new conditions and demands.
