Abstract

The aim of the present study was to examine the effectiveness of the coach, during the practice at young athletes between 12-18 years old. The sample was 21 Volleyball coaches. Verbal and nonverbal behaviors were video recorded during two practices for each coach. The behaviors were analyzed using the instrument of Pereira, Mesquita and Graça (2009), which is a combination of previous relative instruments. The analyses of videotaped behaviors were made by two trained observers who were checked through internal and external reliability. Results indicated a large proportion of reported coaching behaviors, specifically 1688 comments. These were about “Non-accomplished exercise”, divided at “Motivation” 800 (52.13%) comments and “Encouragement” 742 (43.96%) comments. Results also indicated that a large proportion of the 3.670 feedback comments, referred to “General Instruction” 1.234 (33.62%), followed by “Technical Instruction” 1.196 (32.59%). “Other Comments” and “Atomic Tactical Comments” were 562 (15.31%) and 550 (14.98%) respectively. Mann-Whitney analysis revealed that there were not differences between athletes under 12 years old and over 12 years old at coach effectiveness, with 2nd division coaches have more comments at the “Information” of the exercise, and “individual tactic” and “Team tactic”. The results seem logical because coaches should give feedback pertain to the goal of training. The goal of training differs depending the age (experience) of athletes. The results could be a useful tool for intervention and improvement of coaching behavior in Greek volleyball.
